An abscess occurs when pus accumulates in a part of the body where there is an existing infection. There are 2 types of abscess that are common among cats-- dental abscesses and fight abscesses.
Dental abscesses occur when there is a severe infection of the teeth and gums that remain unchecked and treated appropriately. On the other hand, fight abscesses develop when there is injury to the skin and underlying tissues brought about by getting into fights with other cats. When cats fight, they use their sharp claws and teeth. More often than not, many end up with a deep puncture wound that is contaminated with bacteria from the teeth of cats. The puncture wound’s surface tends to heal fast eventually trapping the bacteria under the skin. The bacteria soon multiplies and cause infection and in the process, there is an accumulation of pus. An abscess develops when the body is unable to keep the infection under control. Spots, where abscess are present, are painful and tender to the touch. Affected cats may become lethargic and don’t eat well. The abscess needs to be drained and your veterinarian Happy Valley, OR will prescribe a round of antibiotics to combat the infection.
