Abscess are quite common in dogs. It’s a lump filled with pus brought about by secondary bacterial infection. The mode of treatment will depend to a large extent on the location of the abscess and it’s severity. Many can be treated as outpatient cases, but severe cases will require hospitalization so the abscess can be treated effectively. An abscess has to be cut open so its contents -- pus, blood, and/or fluid-- can be drained. Once it has been fully drained and thoroughly cleaned, it’s bandaged up, and a round of antibiotics is usually prescribed by the veterinarian. Generally, broad-spectrum antibiotics are prescribed, but if tests has been previously performed to determine the specific type of bacteria that is present in the abscess, a specific antibiotic can be prescribed that can effectively target the bacteria.
Some types of abscess may need to be removed surgically. The procedure may need anesthesia, local and/or general, depending on the size and location. If your pet’s abscess needs surgery to remove, do speak with your vet clinic Lexington, KY regarding issues and/or concerns you may have about the procedure.
