Acetaminophen is a common pain reliever in humans. It is also used to treat fever. But pet owners should NEVER give acetaminophen to their dogs because it can cause toxicity. Dogs that ingest acetaminophen may start to display symptoms within 1-4 hours after. Affected dogs suffer from depression and rapid breathing. There may also be nausea, abdominal pain, and drooling. The mucus membranes of the eyes may have a bluish tinge, a condition known as cyanosis. This can occur when something interferes in the abilyt of red blood cells to carry oxygen to the body tissues. In some dogs, there may be buildup of fluid in their faces, forelimbs, and paws several hours after acetaminophen ingestion. Blood in the urine can make it appear dark. In some cases, dogs can die from acetaminophen toxicity without showing any symptoms.
