Acute Renal Failure In Dogs

broken image

There are many causes of acute renal failure (ARF) in dogs. The top reasons include severe dehydration, infection affecting the kidney, kidney cancer, bladder stones, and toxins to name a few. Considering that there is a long list of conditions that could cause ARF, the problem can often be a challenge to pinpoint the underlying cause and arrive at a proper diagnosis. In addition to a thorough physical and medical examination your veterinarian will recommend specific tests to determine the cause so the appropriate treatment can be given.

Renal failure occur when more than 50% of the kidney cells are lost. These cells function to remove toxins and metabolic wastes, regulate water, and maintain proper electrolyte balance. At the early stage of renal failure, the kidney is unable to concentrate the urine. Without proper medical intervention, the kidney functions begin to fail until such time when the kidney totally loses it ability to filter blood and the dog cannot urinate at all. If your pet has been diagnosed with ARF, consult with your veterinarian Matthews, NC about the various treatment options that are available. Click here for more information.
