Alpacas and their Territory

broken image

Do you own an alpaca? If you’re thinking of adopting or purchasing an alpaca and bringing one to your farm then you may want to talk to your vet first. It’s important to take a look at the pros and cons of owning an alpaca before making a commitment to purchase or adopt. Although not as territorial as canines or even donkeys, alpacas are known to protect themselves against danger. In general, alpacas are social herd animals that live in family groups. They have one alpha male that is the territorial leader along with females and their young. If an intruder does invade a Suri’s territory, he will make a high pitched bray and other noises to scare the predator off. If the predator is small, the Suri may charge him or stand his ground and fight him using his hooves and teeth. Contact your vets Derby to learn more about alpacas.
