Aspergillosis in Birds

broken image

Aspergillosis is a fungal infection affecting the respiratory system of birds. Infection occurs when the bird inhales fungal spores that eventually lodge in the air sacs of the lungs. The infection can also affect the bird’s trachea, bronchi, and voice box. Without proper treatment, it can also spread to other organs of the body.

There are 2 types of aspergillosis that affect birds, acute and chronic. The acute form is more severe than the chronic form. Young birds are more susceptible to acute aspergillosis. Difficulty breathing is a prominent symptoms and if there is no immediate veterinary intervention, it can be fatal. Inflammation in the air sacs can lead to mucus buildup in the lungs eventually leading to air sacculitis.

The more chronic form is more prevalent in older birds. The disease process builds up with time. There is gradual onset of symptoms with respiratory difficulties still a primary sign. In many cases, the problem is already well-advanced and complications have started to develop before a proper diagnosis is made. Affected birds may display paralysis, incoordination, and/or tremors as the infection spreads to the nervous system.
