Blister Disease In Snakes

Blister disease (also called vesicular dermatitis, necrotizing dermatitis, scale rot) is one of the many health issues in snakes that are a result of poor care and management. Damp conditions inside the enclosure and poor hygiene can create ideal conditions for the development of blister disease. The scales of affected snakes literally rot and die.

The good news is, blister disease is highly preventable and it is quite easy. Just give your snake an enclosure that is clean, dry, and well-ventilated. And be sure to check the conditions inside the enclosure regularly. Pet snakes should never be allowed to come into prolonged contact with feces, urine, or spoiled food.

The prominent symptoms of the disease are the fluid-filled blisters. When they burst, bacteria from the blisters can invade the tissues and organs of snakes, eventually causing septicemia and death.

If you notice any sign of a skin problem in your pet snake, make an appointment with your animal hospital Tipp City, OH immediately.
