Buying a Pig

broken image

Looking to add a pig to your farm? That’s a great idea. Whether you want to add him as a pet, playmate for another animal, or to raise for meat, there’s a few things you need to know and look out for when buying a pig. First, ask your vet for referrals to reputable breeders or farms to purchase from. Next, make sure you know exactly what you want your pig for before purchasing. What you look for when buying has a lot to do with the pig’s purpose. If you’re going to raise him for meat and eventually butcher him then look for a breed that is more robust and not so thin. If you’re looking for a pet then it probably doesn’t matter if you buy a full or lean breed. For butcher worthy pigs, your Mt. Airy, MD vet will most likely recommend feeding him quite a bit to get up to the perfect weight. Learn more here.
