Gerbils are extra-sensitive creatures. They are very vulnerable to environmental extremes. Here are some tips to ensure that your pet gerbils are given optimum care and attention so they will thrive well.
Housing
Ideally, the minimum dimensions for gerbil housing is a tank which is 40cm wide x 75cm wide x 40cm high with a lid that fits tightly to prevent gerbils from escaping. Wire cages are not ideal because gerbils have a habit of burrowing and this can send their bedding flying in all directions. Place the gerbils’ enclosure away from the sun and draughts.
Bedding
Because gerbils love to burrow, encourage their behavior by putting in a thick layer of bedding made of wood shavings or dried peat moss. Steer clear of bedding made of fluffy material as they can get entangled in it. The enclosure should undergo a thorough scrubbing at least once a week. The old bedding should be disposed of properly and a new layer placed in.
