Hamsters can be considered relatively clean pets. They do not like soiling their playing andsleeping spots, therefore, they will designate a potty corner in theirenclosure. If they pooped and peed allover their enclosure, cleanup will be more frequent. Every day, check your pet’s cage forwaste. Remove it as well as any soiledbedding. Use paper towels to dry wetspots.
Every week, wash the enclosure thoroughly. Remove every exercise gear and toy. Fill a sink with warm and soapy water and puthalf of these in. The other half retainsthe environmental scent your pet is familiar with, reducing the possibility ofstress. Those will be washed next week. Clean the water container and food bowls too.
Take all the bedding out and clean the walls and flooringof the enclosure using hot and soapy water then rinse it properly. Air-dry the cage afterward. Clean any extensions or tubes that areattached to the enclosure the same way. After everything dries, replace the bedding and the equipment, includingthe ones that were not cleaned.
Hopefully, you have a hamster ball where you can placeyour pet inside while you clean the enclosure. This gives your pet the opportunity to explore the house safely. Storage bins with proper ventilation ortravel cages will also work. To avoidundue stress to your pet, clean the enclosure weekly on the same day. Be sure to check your pet while it is insidethe temporary home while you clean.
