Cockatiels have Curved Beaks

· Bird care
vets Dahlonega, GA

Cockatiel owners may have noticed that their bird’s beaks are little different than other species of pet birds. How so? The beak of a cockatiel is curved. You may have found this out firsthand when your bird accidentally ‘hooked’ your finger with his bill. Ouch! A cockatiel’s beak has a curve at the end instead of the typical pointed shape. This enables the cockatiel in the wild to climb things like trees and in captivity to climb a perch, cage sidings, and even your furniture or curtains. Wild cockatiels frequently crawl up trees using their beak as an aid. They simply stick their beak into the tree to give them a stronghold to then lift themselves up. This is great for in the wild, but can be dangerous in captivity as a pet. Be sure to spay special attention to handling your cockatiel in order to avoid getting hooked.
