There are various causes of abscess formation in dogs. The most common involve bacteria that burrows into the skin surface through a wound that is open, such as a scratch, bite wound, cut, puncture wound, or other types of abrasion on the skin surface. The bacteria multiply within the wound and as their population increases, they will invade the surrounding tissue which can eventually trigger an inflammatory reaction. The inflammation causes increased blood flow to the area which is now swollen, reddish in color, and painful. As pus accumulates within the wound, the surrounding fibrous tissue forms a capsule and the infected wound now becomes an abscess.
In some cases, an abscess may form inside the dog’s body such as the mouth and gums, liver, brain, pancreas, lung, and other parts of the body. Unfortunately, their presence can be hard to identify because they are localized inside the body.
