Common Causes Of Skin Problems In Dogs

veterinarian washington dc

Skin problems are among the top reasons for visits to the veterinarian. There are many causes of skin problems in dogs thus there is a need to identify the cause so that the right medication or treatment regimen can be given. Some of the most common causes of skin problems include the following:

External parasites

Fleas, mites, lice, and ticks can cause skin irritation, more so in pets that are allergic to flea saliva. Bites can also lead to itching and persistent scratching, chewing, and licking.

Ringworm

Ringworm is caused by fungi and is highly contagious. In fact, it can be transmitted from pets to humans and vice versa. If one pet in a multi-pet household is infected, it is recommended that all pets be treated and their surroundings disinfected to get rid of the fungal spores.

Allergies—Some dogs are allergic to certain ingredients in their pet food while some are allergic to pollens, dust, mold and other airborne allergens.

Skin infections – Bacterial or yeast infections are often secondary skin invaders to a primary skin disorder.

Mange – One of the most common mange mites that affect dogs is Sarcoptes scabei. Their bites and presence can trigger an inflammatory response that can lead to extreme itching.

Stress or boredom – Lack of mental or physical stimulation or being exposed to certain stressors can possibly pave the way for behavioral issues that include persistent licking and overgrooming.

Metabolic or hormonal problems— Endocrine problems can possibly cause changes in the consistency of the hair coat, thickness, and distribution. In some dogs, there may also be a change in their skin color.
