Constipation in hamsters can be attributed by a variety of causes including a blockage in the intestine, tapeworms and other types of intestinal parasites, or intestinal intussusception. There is a need to identify the underlying cause so the appropriate treatment can be started immediately before further complications set in. Affected hamsters appear to strain in an effort to void out feces that are hard, dry, and in small volume. They may also suffer from abdominal pain. If it’s caused by parasites, worms may be present in the feces especially when there is a heavy parasite load. If intussusception is present, a tubular-like tissue may be protruding from the opening of the anus. Intussusception may be caused by a poor diet, inflammation in the intestines, pregnancy, or insufficient intake of water. If you noticed your dog straining to defecate with little or no feces, call your Marietta, GA vet clinic so the staff can instruct you on what to do or if there is a need to bring your pet in.
