Deafness In Dalmatians

broken image

Did you know that about 3 in 10 dalmatians suffer from moderate to severe hearing problems? Yes, the breed is just among the several white-coated canine breeds that are prone to deafness. Malamutes and huskies also have higher risks to hearing impairment and loss than other breeds.

Dalmatians that become deaf are generally born with normal hearing. The problem usually starts within a few weeks after birth, affecting one or both of the dog’s ears. Single-ear impaired dogs are likely to have normal lives, but dalmatians with total deafness are significantly handicapped and will need extra care and attention.

Studies have shown that the hearing loss is link with cells that produce melanin pigment. These cells are called melanocytes. They are responsible for the spots of dalmatians; they also influence the normal functioning of the dog’s inner ear. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for gene-linked deafness in dalmatians.

Sudden changes in your pet’s health and/or behavior should warrant an appointment with your best animal hospital Frisco, TX.
