Degreasing Your Guinea Pig's Bum

broken image

Did you know that a guinea pig has grease glands that are on his bum? The glands should be cleaned routinely. If you’re not sure about this, call your vet and schedule a routine checkup and ask that the glands of your cavy be cleaned then. Why do the glands need to be cleaned? The glands are dime size in shape and they secrete grease like substances for the guinea pig to mark things or leave his scents for other cavies to find. The glands will especially become smelly during mating season when the males use the glands and secretion to attract females or to give off a smell of dominance to other guinea pigs. The glands should be cleaned once a month. Your Burlington, ON vet can tell you that you can use a cotton ball and eucalyptus oil, coconut oil, or even Dawn dish washing liquid to clean the glands.
