Dogs and Rocks

broken image

Dogs love to explore things around them and most often explore with their nose or their mouth. For instance, rocks can captivate a dog and smelling it just doesn’t cut it sometimes. Many times a dog will lick a rock or pick it up with his mouth and tap it with his teeth or even put it in his mouth to taste. Dogs have been notorious for swallowing rocks especially the small rocks. This can be deadly. Rocks may not digest and could cause tears in the stomach or digestive track as they go down. They can also block the intestines. The medical term for rock eating by dogs is called pica. Pica is a behavior that can be brought on by frustration, boredom, stress, etc. Signs of rocks in the stomach include lethargy and lack of appetite. If you think your dog ate a rock or several rocks, please call your reputed veterinarian Washington DC.
