Dry Eyes in Cats

broken image

Have you ever experienced dry eyes? Your eyes may tend to sting, itch excessively, burn and feel extremely dry as though there is something in your eye. This same sensation can also occur in cats. Felines can get dry eye just like people. The clinical name for this condition is Keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS. As with people, the dry eyes can be caused by allergens in the ear, dust in the eye, debris in the eye, etc. Dry eyes can also be caused by immune-mediated diseases or systemic diseases (i.e. feline herpes virus infections, medications, or hypothyroidism). Dry can occur in any breed of cat no matter the age or sex. Your veterinarian Savannah, GA will need to examine your cat’s eyes and possibly conduct a full body examine to determine the exact cause and treatment. Treatment may include an eye rinse or flush and antibiotic eye drops or regular rewetting drops.
