Gerbils originally come from Mongolia where the environment is very dry. To compensate for frequent times of food scarcity, they evolved to become accomplished food hoarders. Be sure to check your pet’s enclosure regularly for any old or stale food. Ideally, pet gerbils should be on a pelleted diet. There are commercial pellets that are specially formulated to provide a complete and balanced diet for gerbils. Choose pellets that don’t have the different colors because gerbils tend to select what seems interesting. This habit can increase their risk of suffering from nutritional imbalance. To increase enrichment derived from feeding, scatter the pellets around the gerbils’ enclosure. This can also help prevent squabbling between them. You can also enrich your pet’s diet with fruits, vegetable,s and live or freeze-dried insects. But these should be given in moderation. Avoid giving grapes or rhubarb for these are not good for gerbils. When giving seeds and nuts, give the non-salted ones and in moderation because they contain high amounts of fat.
