Feeding Turtles

broken image

The nutritional requirements of turtles depend on the age and whether they are freshwater or land-dwelling turtles. Juvenile turtles are carnivores which means they thrive on a meat-based diet. On the other hand, adult turtles eat both meat and plants thus they are omnivores. Turtles like selecting from a variety of foods (at least 6-7 kinds) offered at any given time. The base of a turtle’s diet is a premium quality turtle pellet to w hich fruits, leafy vegetables, fish, low-salt cat kibble, crickets, and shrimp may be added.

When it comes to the feeding requirements of freshwater turtles and land-dwelling turtles, freshwater turtles have to be submerged in water so they can eat. They may die if they stay out of the water for too long. Be sure that your pet turtle has access to fresh clean water and some branches or rocks that they can go to when they need to get out of the water and avoid drowning.

If you have questions and/or concerns about your pet’s diet, talk to a vet Sugar Land, TX.
