If you own an Abyssinian cat or are thinking of bringing one into your home, talk with your vet first to learn firsthand about this breed, it’s needs, and possible health concerns. You’ll most likely hear that the Abyssinian is a an overall healthy cat with few health concerns. A few issues should be on the radar though. One issue is the Abyssinian’s inheritance of a condition known as patellar luxation, which is another term for kneecap dislocation. This condition occurs when the cat’s kneecap (also called the patella) is dislocated. When this happens, the Abyssinian often feels pain when the kneecap is popped back into place. After that there is little to no discomfort. Although found mostly in the Abyssinian breed, the condition itself is quite rare. Other health issues for Abyssinians include gingivitis or gum disease, which requires routine vet care. Learn more about these concerns from your experienced vet clinic Cincinnati OH.
