Health Issues That Can Be Mistaken As Hairballs In Cats

broken image

When a cat has hairballs in the stomach, he may try to vomit to get rid of the hairballs. But when you see or hear you kitty coughing and making a retching sound, you should NOT assume that it is always caused by the presence of a hairball. Sometimes, it could be something worse than hairballs. Here are some health issues that can be mistaken for the hairballs:

Asthma

The symptoms of feline asthma include frequent or prolonged bouts of coughing. A wheezing sound may be detected if you listen close enough.

Heartworm disease

The presence of adult heartworms in the blood vessels of the lungs of infected cats can cause respiratory problems. Also, immature heartworm larvae can trigger a severe, inflammatory response in the smaller blood vessels of the lungs.

Foreign bodies

Grass awn or any type of foreign body along any part of the upper respiratory tract can cause stubborn cough.

Chemical irritants

Cats can react to chemical sprays, powders, and propellants with coughing episodes.

Frequent bouts of coughing should be examined by a Manlius, NY veterinarian. Visit this link for additional information: https://fayettevilleveterinaryhospital.com
