- Don’t place a mat or other soft materials just right before the opening of the litter box. While this can help minimize the spread of cat litter to therest of your home, your cat may like the soft texture of the mat or towel as he walks toward the litter box opening and may choose to do his thing on it instead. Doing so may encourage him to branch out to carpets, rugs, towels, etc. anywhere in your home. To prevent this behavior, use a rubber or plastic mat instead.
