Managing Your Cat’s Hyperthyroidism

broken image

Hyperthyroidism is a common health issue in senior cats. If your cat has this condition she may experience both an increased appetite and weight loss. She may also suffer from excessive thirst and difficulty managing her body temperature. Your cat may shed a lot and look unkempt. If your cat is diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, you will need to medicate your cat daily. This medication may be administered orally or she could be prescribed a transdermal cream to be rubbed into the inside of her ear. Be careful when handling your cat’s hyperthyroid medication because you may inadvertently dose yourself while medicating your cat. Give your cat her medication and then immediately wash your hands. More extreme treatments may be indicated such as surgical removal of the thyroid or radioactive iodine therapy. These treatments are usually only recommended when medications don’t work because they are more invasive and expensive. Learn more from your pet clinic Glendale, AZ.
