Rabbits, guinea pigs, and ferrets also have their share of mites, lice, and other external parasites. Dog fleas can feed on rabbits and ferrets although they are not much of a problem for guinea pigs. Fur mites or ear mites can infest rabbits. Fur mites infestation are characterized by the formation of flakes or dandruff on the skin over the rabbit’s shoulders. Affected rabbits don’t suffer significant itching. The presence of ear mites cause rabbits to scratch at their ears frequently and there may be accumulation of earwax. Guinea pigs acquire lice and mites from new bedding or other guinea pigs that are harboring the parasites. Some mites cause intense itching and formation of scabs. Ferrets can get ear mites from other pets, such as dogs, cats, and other ferrets.
