Mites In Cats

broken image

There are several species of mites t hat can affect cats, and each show different signs which eventually mean it will also need a specific treatment. Demodex gatoi is a common cause of intense itching in cats; it lives between the cat’s hair and is also highly contagious, meaning it can easily be spread from cat to cat. On the other hand, Demodex cati lives in the hair follicle of cats and is not contagious. If your cat appears to be itching persistently and constantly, you should make an appointment with your animal hospital sooner rather than later. Without prompt veterinary intervention, the skin of the cat may become red, scaly, and may become infected.

In order to determine what type of mite is present, your pet clinic Portland, OR may do a skin scraping; a blunt blade is gently scraped against the skin of the cat. Sedation may be required.
