Most sources of fats and oils contain high quantities of omega-6 compared to omega-3 fatty acids. However, it’s important that dog food should contain a balance of both essential fatty acids (EFA). The role that they play in supporting optimum health is affected by the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, as well as the total amount of each EFA in the animal’s diet. The recommended ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is 2.6:1 to 26:1 (National Research Council). On the other hand, The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) include a “maximum omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 30:1 for dog and cat nutrient profiles”. Observing proper ratios can help ensure optimum benefits. Metabolism converts EFA into substances that adversely affect inflammatory processes in the body. Omega-3 fatty acids are generally less inflammatory compared to omega-6. But too much intake of omega-6 from the diet and insufficient dietary omega-3 could create a long-term low-grade inflammation that has been linked to certain illnesses and health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cancer.
