Pet dogs always look forward to outdoor excursions with their humans. In order to avoid unfortunate circumstances, here are general precautionary measures that pet owners must observe when exercising with pet dogs:
Be alert for any signs that your dog is tired, such as slowing down, panting, lagging behind, or stopping. Do give time your pooch to rest for awhile.
Watch for signs of hyperthermia or heatstroke such as excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, increased agitation, and/or confusion. Once you notice any of these signs, bring your pet to a cool place and apply cool water to the dog’s skin, belly, and under the legs. Considering that heatstroke is a medical emergency, take your pet to the nearest animal hospital Mt. Airy, MD ASAP.
Avoid walking on areas with hot surfaces because your dog’s paws can become burned or may form blisters which can possibly become infected.
When walking on snow or icy roads, steer clear of areas which have been treated with salt which can stick to your pet’s paws and can cause an upset stomach when ingested.
Bring water for your pet, and be sure that he drinks at regular intervals to keep hydrated.
