The Basenji was actually designed and developed a little differently than most other dogs. The breed first appeared in ancient Africa and was eventually brought up the Nile River to Egypt as gifts for the Egyptian royalty. The dog is more catlike than doglike. It grooms itself constantly and prefers to be alone sometimes but not always. The dog also enjoys hunting and likes to hunt bigger prey. The Pigmy people in Africa still use the Basenji to hunt large prey. Fully grown the Basenji can be between 20 and 25 pounds and stand 15 to 17 inches.
