The cat was actually called the British Shorthair until it entered the New World via the Mayflower. The cats were on this ship to help keep the mice population under control. Once in the New World it became known as the Domestic Shorthair and then later on the American Shorthair. The cat’s physical characteristics changed to match its new life. The cat was bred to be larger, sturdier and even pointed ears, rounded head, and muscular body. The color variations also changed.
