Training Your Dog to Sit on Command

Dog Care

Training your dog to sit on command gives you a tool to get him under control quickly. Plus the sitting position is the starting point for many more advanced obedience commands so it is a good beginning for training. Get down to your dog’s level and hold a food treat in front of his nose to get his attention. Then raise the treat up and over your dog’s head so he must lower his rear end to continue following it. Say your dog’s name and the SIT command. As soon as your dog’s rear end touches the floor, give him the treat and lots of praise. Practice this often and gradually increase the time before delivering the treat. Reduce and eventually eliminate the treats so your dog sits on your command and praise alone. Be patient and never yell at your dog or punish him while he is learning. Learn more from your veterinary clinic Michigan City, IN.
