Training Your Parakeet to Step Up on Your Finger

vet Carrollton, GA

Training your parakeet to step up on your finger gives you a way to take him in and out of his cage. Ensure that your parakeet is comfortable with you by sitting close to his cage while singing or speaking softly to him. Drape your hand inside for exploration and hand feed him. Take an extra perch and hold it parallel to your bird’s feet on the lower abdomen. Say the UP command and press the perch hard enough so that your parakeet will step up on the perch. Practice this often and then try it with your finger on top of the perch. Over time your parakeet will step up on your finger alone. While he is on your finger, move him slowly around the cage and in and out of the door. Soon this will become the standard method for taking your bird outside the cage.
