There are two general methods by which allergy symptoms in cats are managed. The first is to prevent exposure to the potential allergen that the cat is allergic to, and the second is to use anti-allergy medications to stop the allergic reaction.
For dogs with food allergy, there is a need to identify which particular ingredient/s is causing the hypersensitive reaction. The dog may go through an elimination diet and/or be placed on a prescription diet. On the other hand, cats with atopy are allergic to dust and pollens which are airborne and exists anywhere in the environment. Since preventing exposure to environmental allergens is next to impossible, cats with atopy are given medications to prevent the allergic reaction. These medication s include antihistamines and corticosteroids. Take note, however, that these medications are not without side effects, thus be sure to follow the correct dosage and application instructions given by your Mt. Airy, MD vet.
