Urine Scald in Guinea Pigs

Urine scald can happen to animals when they lay in their own urine for a long period of time and the urine soak into the fur and skin causing a burn or scalding. This can happen to your guinea pig if the bedding is not replaced regularly. Urine scald can be very painful for guinea pigs. You can help prevent this by cleaning the cage completely once a week. You may also want to pick out wet spots daily or every other day if possible. If bedding isn’t kept dry, a guinea pig can sit in it for so long that the fur and skin soaks up the urine causing a burn. Treatment usually consists of a vet visit and prescription topical cream to soothe the pain. Keep a calendar to help you remember to clean your Peruvian’s cage regularly.
