Guinea pigs need to have a daily intake of vitamin C from their diet, without which, they can develop a deficiency called ‘scurvy’. The recommended dose of vitamin C per day is about 25 mg. But guinea pigs that are manifesting signs of deficiency can be given twice the recommended amount.
When it comes to vitamin C supplements, adding vitamin C drop to the guinea pig’s drinking water is not recommended as water can quickly cause degradation of the vitamin. Also, adding anything to your pet’s drinking water can change it taste, and your guinea pig may not drink as much as they should have. It’s better to give vitamin C drops using a syringe. Or you may give children’s chewable tablet. Find one with less sugar, xylitol or other sweeteners. Avoid those that contain artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Multivitamins are a No-No to guinea pigs.
