Colic is a dangerous illness in horses especially if it’s not treated quickly. Symptoms can go from small to drastic in a short amount of time. It’s important to recognize the signs of colic early on so you can call your vet and get your horse help as soon as possible. First, colic generally occurs due to a problem in the horse’s gastro-intestinal tract, which causes severe abdominal pain. Triggers or causes for this can include an abrupt change in grain or hay, sudden change in temperature, dehydration, impaction, gas, and even stress. The most common symptoms of colic can include the horse pawing at the ground, lying down for long periods of time, excessive rolling, thrashing or kicking, grunting, or even moaning.
