What Cats are at Risk for Heartworm Disease?

broken image

You should assume that all cats are at risk for heartworm disease. In fact, heartworm disease has been recorded in all 50 U.S. states and all Canadian provinces. Whether you think your area is prone to mosquitoes (the number one transmitter of heartworm disease) or not, you should still assume your cat is at risk. Since mosquitoes are the number one transmitter of the disease, there is not really any place that is safe from the disease itself. For this reason, you should take precautions by keeping your home treated for mosquitoes, don’t let standing water stay around too long as it will attract mosquitoes, and always treat your cat with a monthly heartworm prevention medication. Only the medication will protect your cat from the disease whether she is bitten by a mosquito or not. For more information, give your veterinary clinic Washington DC a call.
