Conjunctivitis in Cats

Are you familiar with conjunctivitis? It is also called pink eye and it is common in cats and in dogs. Pink eye is extremely contagious in cats. It is often caused from allergies, bacterial infections or viral infections. Signs often include red or irritated eyes, gummy or stickiness coming from the eyes causing the eyelids to stick together, watery eyes, weepy eyes, scratching and squinting. If your cat has these symptoms, please call your vet right away to schedule an exam. Pink eye can often occur in felines as a result of the FHV-1 virus or chlamydophila. Pink eye in contagious from cat to cat so if one cat in your home has pink eye, please keep him separated from the rest of the household cats. Additional symptoms may include puffiness and swelling, pawing at the eye, and extreme discomfort from the itchiness of the eyes.
