Why Do Cats have Rough Tongues?

broken image

A cat’s tongue can be pretty rough. If you own a cat then you’ve probably been licked by your cat before. It is definitely not the same as being licked by a dog. A dog’s tongue is wet, slimy and actually quite smooth. A cat’s tongue is rough, dry, and not smooth at all. Why? A cat has a rough tongue because of the many things a cat uses his tongue for. Here’s an example, a cat grooms constantly. In order to groom and push the oils around the coat and straight out the fair, the cat’s tongue needs to be a little rough kind of like a brush. In fact, a cat’s tongue has tiny backward facing barbs called filiform papillae on them. Not only do these barbs help groom, but they also come in handy when the cat catches prey. The barbs help the cat hang onto the prey. Learn more by clicking here or contacting your veterinarian Michigan City, IN.
