Dementia and Your Dog

broken image

Your dog may show some signs of dementia as he ages, especially cognitive dysfunction. You may notice your dog appears disoriented and he may experience sensory deficiencies especially in his hearing and sight. Your dog may also suffer with incontinence, sleep problems (too much or too little), trouble eating and he is disinterested in exercise or play. These issues are symptomatic of other conditions and diseases besides dementia. Thus you need to seek medical intervention to check for underlying health issues that need treatment. Usually cognitive changes develop slowly and over time. You may be able to slow down cognitive dysfunction with increased mental stimulation and changes in diet. Consider using food puzzles where your dog need to figure how to get to the food inside. Your dog will keep healthier, both physically and mentally, through exercise and socialization. Treat your aging dog with patience and kindness. Learn more from your vet clinic Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
