Do Cats Need to be Groomed?

broken image

Most cats do not need to be groomed in the sense of a routine bath. In fact, cats are very good at self bathing. They have rough tongues that do pretty well at removing dirt and debris when self-grooming. Cats also don’t need routine baths because the shampoos often used can strip their coat of oil. Cats need the oil in their coats to keep their skin and coat healthy and to help keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter. When cats self groom their tongues are evening out the natural oils of the coat. Grooming that does need to be done regularly is nail trimming, teeth brushing, and brushing the coat. Brushing the coat removes dead hair and any insects or bugs hitching a ride in the coat. Brushing the teeth keeps the teeth and gums clean. Nail trimming is always needed.
