Diabetes can indicate a lack of insulin hormone (type 1) or your cat’s inability to respond to insulin (type 2). This can cause health issues because of an elevated blood sugar level. Your cat may have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. If your cat is obese, she is at risk of contracting diabetes. Thus it is important to keep your cat at a normal weight. Older cats, especially male one, are more likely to develop diabetes. If your cat has diabetes, you may notice a change of appetite (too much or too little), weight loss and increased urination. She may also look unkempt and act lethargic. These are common symptoms of other feline diseases so seek medical attention for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Your diabetic cat may need insulin injections, an oral medication, or a change of diet. Learn more from your pet clinic Newmarket, ON.
