E. cuniculi In Rabbits

broken image

Rabbits that are infected by E. cuniculi manifest various symptoms that are often based on the severity of the problem and the route by which the infection was transmitted. Some of the most prominent symptoms include the following:

  • Eyes that are red and swollen
  • Loss of weight
  • Increased water intake and urine frequency and output
  • A weakness of the back legs
  • Head-tilting
  • Fits
  • Incoordination (falling or rolling over)
  • Cataracts
  • Paralysis

The problem is caused by a protozoan parasite called Encephalitozoon cuniculi whose predilection sites are the rabbit’s kidneys and nervous system. The infection can be transmitted between rabbits through the urine or during pregnancy. Kits (baby rabbits) can be infected while still in their mother’s uterus and the main symptoms that are manifested affect the eyes and usually occur during early adulthood.

The best way to protect your pet rabbit is to create a stable environment, regular monitoring, observing a quarantine period when there is a new rabbit, and maintaining strict hygiene and sanitation.
