Eye Problems In Pets

broken image

There are various reasons for eye problems in pets. While most issues tend to be minor, early detection and veterinary intervention are important to prevent serious complications from developing. Prompt medical treatment is important because eye issues tend to worsen quickly, and can possibly lead to vision problems and loss. Some of the most common eye problems in pets include allergies, cherry eye, and conjunctivitis.

Hypersensitivity reactions/allergies

Some pets are more prone to developing hay fever, which causes itchy and teary eyes. The discomfort causes them to scratch their eyes or rub them against a solid surface.

Cherry Eye

The problem is characterized by the presence of a pinkish bulge in the corner of the eye nearest the nose. It starts as an inflammation of the animal’s third eyelid and tear gland. Without prompt medical intervention, the tear gland prolapses thus appearing as a pinkish mass protruding from the animal’s eyelid.

Conjunctivitis

Also called, pink eye, conjunctivitis is caused by an infection of the conjunctival membranes, or the membranes that line the conjunctiva. Affected pets appear to squint or blink excessively, and there is a yellow or pus-like discharge from the eyes.

Any problems affecting your pet’s eye/s should be checked by a veterinarian Leesburg, VA.
