Histoplasmosis In Cats

broken image

Histoplasmosis is caused by a fungus that lives in soil that contains lots abundant organic materials particularly guano (bat droppings) and bird droppings. The organisms can be carried by the air and spread to a considerable distance in dust that has been contaminated. During inhalation, spores are brought into the lungs and spreads to the different organs of the body via the bloodstream. Histoplasma can also enter the body through the mouth and cause infection in the digestive system. Fortunately, Histoplasma infection in cats is quite rare. While there are mild cases in which affected cat show only mild non-specific symptoms, those suffering from chronic health issues may develop serious infection because their immune system function is significantly reduced. Most cases of feline histoplasmosis affect cats that spend time outdoors. Some common symptoms include eye problems, fever, difficulty breathing, slow weight loss, coughing, and lameness.
