Pot-bellied pigs can be peculiar creatures. These pigs are not to be confused with micro-pigs. The pot-bellied pig is an actual breed of swine. They are smaller than hogs, but are by no means ‘micro’. They are simply miniatures, if you will. Pot-bellied pigs sweat just like regular sized pigs or hogs. No, they don’t sweat like people, cows or even horses that tend to sweat through pores in the skin. Pot-bellied pigs don’t actually have very good pores or sweat glands in their skin so they can’t really regulate their body temperature that way. Instead, they sweat through the sweat glands located in the nose. Sweat, though, isn’t enough to keep a pig cool which is why they also wallow in mud and like to soak in water. In the warmer months some owners actually set up a watering hole or small swimming area for their pigs. Click here to learn more or call your veterinarians Wichita, KS.
