Did you know that a common illness found in lizards, turtles and snakes is something called mouth rot? This is a common illness for iguanas as well. The medical term for mouth rot is necrotic stomatitis. Stomatitis refers to an inflammation of the mouth or the oral cavity. The condition generally appears as inflammation or small hemorrhages on the gums or as excessive amounts of mucus in the mouth that may contain blood or pus. This can cause lesions and hemorrhages to appear on the inside edge of the iguana’s mouth or lips. Mouth rot can cause a very swollen mouth in which the iguana may appear to have his mouth open to breathe. This is not the case, however. Mouth rot often occurs as a secondary condition of another illness or injury including poor nutrition, stress, improper environmental temperatures or overcrowding.
