It is typically shows up as small hemorrhages on the gums or as large amounts of mucus in the mouth. Mouth rot has been known to appear on the inside or edge of the mouth and lips too. In many cases, mouth rot is the result of another type of illness including malnutrition, stress, poor living environment, or trauma. Your iguana will need to be examined by your vet in order for a cause and treatment plan to be made. Severe mouth rot may need to be biopsied. Surgery may be needed to remove bone or deep tissue to completely rid the mouth of the infection. Long term management may include antibiotic cream application.
