broken image

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are medications that can be found in every medicine cabinet in homes. Common examples of NSAIDs medication include ibuprofen (Motrin®), acetylsalicylic acid (ASA or Aspirin™), naproxen (Aleve®), and acetaminophen (Tylenol®). In humans, these medications are used for pain relief and for its anti-inflammatory effects.

There are also NSAIDs that are specially formulated for use in animals. These include deracoxib (Deramaxx®),meloxicam (Metacam®), ketoprofen (Ketofen®) and carprofen (Rimadyl®). Take note that using two different types of NSAIDs may cause an adverse reaction such as bleeding disorders, gastric ulcer, or damage to the kidneys or liver. Thus, you veterinarian may advise a period of non-NSAID administration when switching from one type of NSAID to a more potent type of NSAID.

Considering that there are side effects associated with NSAIDs, you should always consult your veterinarian Ellicott City, MD before giving any medication to your pet. Visit this website for more information.
