Tear Straining in Dogs

vet Dallas, GA

We love to keep our dogs squeaky clean. However, one of the most common areas where our dog needs constant cleaning is his eyes. While it’s quite normal for dogs to have tear stains, there are others that are predisposed to have more than others. This can be quite annoying as they make our dogs look scrappy and unclean. If you notice your dog having too much tear stain than usual you should immediately consult with your veterinarian. Usually, tear stains are an indication of some underlying health condition that may be more serious.

The following are some of the causes of tear stain in dogs: first, and the most common cause, is when a foreign object gets caught in the eye which leads to irritation and too much tear production. Another known cause is when an ingrown eyelash, an inverted eyelid, or har growing close to the eye gets caught on the eye’s surface. Genetic causes are also known culprits. For example defects in the tear ducts will cause an inefficient drainage of tears. Glaucoma and eye infections also contribute to excessive tear production.
